What We Do
The GATE Department, in collaboration with STAR Science, has serviced over 40 districts in Southern California, offering classes in the Arts, Humanities, Critical Thinking, and Science fields to identified gifted students, high-achieving students, and those students who wish to rise to the challenge of a college-level, fast-paced class.

Some of Our Classes:

EARTH SCIENCE
Astronomy – A survey course covering the wonders of the universe. Through reconstruction of modern and ancient astronomical tools, investigation of our solar system, and study of surrounding stars and galaxies, students will begin to understand the mysteries of space.

Nature’s Fury – Erupting Volcanoes! Twisting Tornadoes! Ground-shaking Earthquakes! Find out how, when, and why Mother Nature decides to show her power, strength, and fury. Recreate natural disasters in your classroom while learning the fundamentals of Meteorology and Geology.

PHYSICAL SCIENCE
Shocking Science! – Finally, a science class guaranteed to spark your imagination! Learn the basic concepts of electricity and magnetism using wires, bulbs, batteries, aluminum foil, and other commonly found items. Build a fruit battery, an electric maze, an electric quiz game, and much more. You’ll be shocked by what you learn!

Wings and Things – How does a kite fly? How does a glider soar through the air without an engine? How does a 700,000 lb. Jumbo Jet stay in the air? The answer to these questions come from aerodynamics! Students will investigate the four forces of flight and Bernoulli’s Law though a series of activities. Flying is easier than you think!

LIFE SCIENCE
Entomology – Think all bugs are creepy? Let STAR’s premiere entomologist show you that many are actually beneficial to human life! Students will study insect life-cycles, developmental stages, social behavior, and anatomy using live and preserved specimens.

Your Icky, Gooey, Gross and Groovy Body -Get to know yourself, inside and out! In this course, students will learn about the various systems of the human body, from the skin, bones, and muscles, to the inner workings of the heart and brain. Create fake blood and scabs, test your senses, learn to take fingerprints, and even dissect a sheep eye! Eeew!

INTERDISCIPLINARY SCIENCE
Best of STAR Science - Can’t decide between making ice cream or dissecting sheep eyeballs? Are you curious about circuits and optical illusions? Sample some of STAR’s coolest classes with Best of STAR Science! Activities cover earth, physical and life sciences.

Inventor’s Station - Inventor’s Station will take children on a worldwide history tour. Learn about different civilizations, their inventions, and how their inventions changed our lives. Reinvent the wheel! Make your own movies! Design your own robot! Students will recreate and build their own unique inventions while learning about basic Physics, Biology, and Chemistry concepts. Discover the inventor in you!

Super Science Sleuths – How do detectives catch criminals? Learn their science secrets and become a junior crime fighter! Take and identify fingerprints, understand how lenses work in binoculars and magnifying glasses, learn to write and decipher secret messages! Students will learn how Anatomy, Chemistry, and Physics are used to solve crimes.

Gizmos and Gadgets - Discover your inventiveness! Let STAR Science show you how everyday objects can be turned into useful and fun contraptions. Launch a rocket! Build an electric fan! Even construct your very own car! Create wacky gizmos and gadgets all while learning the dynamics of forces, energy, and momentum.
